R. B. Thomas was born in 1898 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He attended the University of Cincinnati, where he played football for two years under Howard Jones
R. B. Thomas was a prominent defensive tackle for the Bearcats and played guard in the College Football All-America game in 1922.
He was selected All-American three times and won the Outland Trophy, given to the best interior lineman in the nation. He later became coach of the Bearcats basketball team, then president of Michigan State College (now University) and the University of Illinois, then president of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Thomas died in 1984 at age 76.
